Commenced career in the Civil Engineering Dept. of British Rail London Midland Region working on the modernisation of the civil engineering assets of the region. Completed graduate training course and was elected as a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
On completion of the modernisation programme with BR. moved into lecturing in Civil and Structural engineering subjects. Following this, joined the technical department of the NFBTE advising builders on technical matters such as Building Regs, British Standards, Quality Assurance and construction problems generally. In due course promoted to Director of Technical Services. Elected a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building in 1976.During this time served on the DOE Project Information Group, which gave rise, at government request, to the formation of the Co-ordinating Committee for Project Information representing both producers and users of project information. Served on this committee and became Chairman of the Drawings working group and Secretary of the Specification working group. First guidance for practitioners was published in 1987 in the form of a Code of procedure for Production Drawings and a Code of procedure for Project Specification together with a Common Arrangement of Work Sections for Building Works. Project manager for the preparation of further guidance published in 2003 entitled Production Information a code of procedure for the construction industry. Currently (2009) working on the revision of this document.
